Bal Masque 2006 - "Heroes & Villains"


"Communisam in America & Avian Flu"




Charles Schulz as the mythological hero Perseus won the coveted JUDGES’ CHOICE AWARD at the Bal Masque held at the Hilton Harrisburg on Saturday evening, January 28. The Bal Masque, sponsored by PSECU this year, is the Art Association of Harrisburg’s major fundraiser, generating over $20,000 for the organization’s education and exhibition programs.

Other winners in the costume competition were Lynn Spahr as the villainous “Avian Flu” for “Most Outrageous,”  Eric Berry as the fantasy hero “Sporkman” for “Most Comical“,  and Schulz as Perseus, complete with his mirrored shield and head of Medusa in basket, as “Best Theme Interpretation.”

In the Couples category, Eric and Shannon Ulsh received “Most Outrageous” for their gory depiction of Jack the Ripper and a victim. For “Best Theme Interpretation,” Leo and Elaine Schiller won top honours for their “AAH Super Packers.” (Schiller is the official shipping agent for the Art Association of Harrisburg’s exhibitions!). For “Most Comical,” Geoff and Diane McDowell received the prize for their “Santa and the Grinch.”

The large “Kill Bill” group received the “Best Theme Interpretation” prize in their category. “Kill Bill” characters were Martha Brown, Leon Gettle, Steve Kury, Aimee Lacaste, Chris Mlynarczy, Desiree Petrus, Linda Rhinehart, Karen Seeber, and Jim Stopyra. Jonathan Frazier and Denise Seiders won a “Most Outrageous” nod for their “Titanic Survivors,” and AAH intern Alexis Hair received a “Most Comical” special award for her portrayal of an artistically-articulate Yoko Ono.

LInda Miller won the Grand Raffle Prize, a three-day weekend at a lovely Rehobeth Beach condo, courtesy of Tracey and Bob Meloni. Marlo Heagy won the 40ccMiniChopper, contributed by Pep Boys, and Karen Sandnes won the Sculptured Images Spa Package.

Costume judges for the Bal were: Kate Phillips, Governor Rendell’s Press Secretary; Bob Krotec, owner of Fitness Firm; Mike Pavone, advertising executive; Sara Bozich, Patriot News writer; and Maile Paduano of PSECU. Emcees for the event were WHP Co-Anchors Letitia Miele and Tom Donovan.

The date of the 2007 Bal Masque is Saturday, January 27...theme to be announced!
